The renovation of Helsham House was to sensitively update this significant example of mid-century modernism to suit the needs of a young family. The design balances contemporary functionality with the home’s architectural heritage, operating within the constraints of heritage overlays and preserving the character-defining features of the original Peter Hall design.
The design process involved close collaboration with the family to understand their preferences and lifestyle. This partnership resulted in a home that reflects their personalities and values. The careful selection of materials and design elements ensured that the home is not only beautiful but also a true reflection of the family’s identity.
Heritage preservation with contemporary comfort was at the core of our approach. We retained key design elements, replacing the original cork flooring with a new cork specification that remained faithful to the original, and carefully matched the existing timber joinery to preserve the home’s material continuity. Where restoration was needed, we selected finishes that echoed the textures and tones of the 1970s palette, allowing old and new to coexist seamlessly.
